I'm so granola!

Okay, so I am the least "granola" person ever but I am making Liam's baby food and that makes a teensy bit granola.

At first when people said they made their own baby food I thought it was hard and was super impressed. I found out how freakin easy it is and I am no longer impressed! ;)
So far I've made: peas, green beans, apples, banana, papaya, carrots, yams, sweet potatoes and acorn squash. So far his favs are peas and acorn squash. He loves avacado...which I think is funny b/c I ate avacado tacos almost everyday when I was preggers.

I've been buying some frozen and some fresh veggies. The frozen veggies, I've read are just as nutritious as fresh because they are flash frozen at their peak of freshness. Plus, some of the frozen vegetables come in that handy steam bags and all you have to do is zap them in the microwave and then puree!
Veggies
Steamer. This is the one kitchen tool that I use almost everyday..even before all the baby food makin. I think it's going to break down soon.
I've had it for FOR-EVAH.

Puree. I finally pulled out my food processor. The blender wasn't cuttin' it...literally. To make the food more puree and thinner be sure to use the water from the steamer...lots of nutients in the water. For the veggies that I steamed in the microwave I just used reg. water/formula or water from another vegetable that I steamed in the steamer.
Then pour the food in the trays and freeze. I got these at Babies R Us. They are by Wholesome Baby Food. They have covers too. After they are frozen pop them out and put them in freezer bags so you can keep using the trays.

wholesomebabyfood.com is an awesome site. Tons of ideas on how to pick each vegetable and fruit and best ways to cook them, etc. The fruits are a bit more work than some of the vegetables but I bought some frozen too.
Not sure if I am saving $$ or not...I feel like I am b/c he doesn't eat that much yet so we would be wasting jars of food. I feel better about making his food since I didn't fair so well in the breast feeding department. Since I like to cook...it's kinda fun too!

love this! you know what you really need? An immersion blender!! We got one for our wedding and use it all the time. It would make the whole thing easier.
I think I would make baby food too. More nutritious and cheaper?? right?
Funny..someone atually gave me a book called 'Cooking for your Dog'. I haven't tried it yet but should.

I had that working mama guilt so I made Hagen's food. People were impressed...I ate it up but it was really easy! I was surprised that mashed avacados will stay bright green! The top thin layer will brown a bit, but the majority of it will stay bright in freezing!

I popped them out into ziplocs and put the date on the bag to throw away.

I also hated my blender. I started using a small food processor and it worked great! I actually did cantelope, honeydew, and watermelon and it was very wattery...so I used it as a liquid to mix his cereal...he loved it!!

Doesn't it make you feel good? I am not sure of the cost savings either, but it did make me feel good. Plus, he eats any and all fruits and veggies now. Except asparagus...he is a very good eater in the fruit and veg dept!!

You go girl!

I made a lot of Hudson's baby food too. I got the Beaba from William Sonoma for one of my shower gifts and I love it. You can steam and puree all in one machine. And it's super easy to clean!

I could never really tell if I saved money though, but at least I felt better about what he was eating. :)

Good job Jen!!

So impressed. You're granola in my book. Now, just buy some Birks and get it over with.
